Frequently Asked Questions

Real answers to the questions new dancers most often ask.

Getting Started

Do I need a partner?

No. Everyone is welcome. You can come to a dance, lesson, or workshop either with a partner or by yourself. During group lessons everyone rotates partners to experience dancing with different people.

I've never danced before — is that OK?

Now is the best time to start. We welcome beginners and everyone with various levels of experience. A free lesson is offered at every monthly social ballroom dance, which makes it an ideal entry point.

When do lessons start?

Our standard lesson series picks up in January. Workshops are offered throughout the year. See the schedule page for current dates.

Dress & Shoes

Is there a dress code?

No exact dress code is observed, however, everyone dresses nicely for dance occasions. Most dancers wear business casual — pants and a shirt for men, dresses or pants with a nice shirt for women. Some dances will be more formal or dressy, and they'll be advertised as such. Wear clothing that makes it easy and enjoyable to dance.

Do I need dance shoes?

Proper footwear is important for comfort and safety. Buying dance shoes for your first social dance or class is recommended but not necessary. We suggest smooth or leather-soled shoes that fit well and stay on your feet. Avoid rubber-soled sneakers — they grip the floor and can cause stumbles.

Skills & Community

What's the most important thing to learn?

The most important skill for good social dancing is leading and following. This is a non-verbal communication from the leader to the follower indicating the direction, timing, and style of the dance. It takes time to develop, and every dance you try makes it stronger.

What dances will I learn?

Our lessons and socials cover ballroom (waltz, foxtrot, tango), Latin (rumba, cha-cha), and swing (East Coast and West Coast Swing). Over the course of a year you'll get exposure to all of them.

Payments & Pricing

How do I pay for lessons?

Dance lessons are payable in person, paid in full, at the first lesson in cash or check payable to USA Dance.

How much is membership?

Standard USA Dance membership is $35. Our chapter is currently running a promotional offer — $15 for new and renewing members — which the chapter subsidizes. Membership includes free entry to a regular social ballroom dance. (The free entry does not apply to special events.) See the membership page for full details.
